Alexis Adel is burning up… In Cairo, she teaches English most evenings and works long hours as a trainee reporter during the day. Under Hosni Mubarak’s rule, Egypt is a land where most struggle against fear, poverty and extremism, with only their faith to sustain them. Alexis is determined to become the best news reporter she can be, to make her mark in a world that doubts her, and is desperate to cover some serious news. The workload and a short-lived affair with a philandering news anchor bear heavily, bringing exhaustion and insomnia. But then she meets Hisham, a poor aspiring diplomat – and their mutual attraction is instant. Alexis gets her big break when she covers a bombing at a rural church. Though she’s finally offered a position as a fully fledged reporter, the horrors she witnessed take a further toll on her health. Taking a two-week break in London, she leaves the job and Hisham behind to see her father – and a doctor. After a difficult flight and a bout of fainting, Alexis makes straight for an A&E. Soon, at the age of twenty-five, she is fighting for her life. As she faces up to fate and fears, a voice within urges her back to Egypt.
